Happy Passover Jewish people! And also non-Jewish people, you should be happy too.

…Also Happy Easter if that is your appropriate holiday. Cause that’s tomorrow.

Yesterday I watched Prince of Egypt and it was AMAZING

I haven’t watched that in soooo long. Have some thoughts:

I have exactly one criticism and that is that it would be cool if there were more Egyptians cast. Or even Israelis. Like any, I’m not sure there were any.

That aside.

OMG THAT MOVIE IS AWESOME.

The music is gorgeous, and hearing Hebrew sung in a major motion picture makes me cry. The opening song is epic.

At no point are any of the Egyptians dehumanized, especially Ramses; they’re always very sympathetic. The gravity of things like the tenth plague is wonderfully expressed, as is Moses’ emotion.

There is some beautiful animation (the water into blood, for instance) and some great placement (the way that Ramses and Seti sit with the statue in the background).

Some of my favorite parts:

When Ramses declares that he’s going to destroy the Hebrews and and Moses realizes there’s going to be another plague, there is a shot of the depiction on the wall of Seti and the death of the Hebrew babies, which draws the parallel not only with what Ramses is about to do, but with the Tenth plague.

When they are about to cross the Red Sea, the Hebrews are not following Moses—at least not entirely. Aaron looks at Moses, then nods at everyone else. They’re following him and Miriam.

After they cross the Red Sea and the Egyptians pursuing them drown, there is a distinct difference in the reactions that the children have and those that the elderly have. The children are happy—gloriously happy, but that’s pretty much the only emotion they’re showing. The elderly, on the other hand—the are in awe. It seems like they can’t quite believe what’s happening, can’t believe that they’re free…and there is a little bit of horror there, too, because unlike the children, they understand that they just watched people die, and they have some understanding of the power they just witnessed.

And my favorite, favorite part:

At the end, three quotes appear on the screen. One from the Torah, one from the New Testament, and one from the Qu’ran.

So here’s the thing, this guy in the lounge today was saying that he wanted to kill himself when he was doing his thermodynamics homework.

Now he didn’t say this as a person who is currently suicidal or has been would say. He was fucking giggling when he said it. It was a joke to him.

He was…

Good job calling him out.
*sigh* There are a lot of reasons I dont hang out there more.

ANNIE - Official Trailer (2014)

I’m not gonna lie, I teared up a little bit when I saw the trailer.

I’m sooo excited for this… cheese fest and all!

this is so freaking adorable and yes i cried. I can’t wait.

I CAN’T WAIT

So I’ll probably get slammed for this (because, tumblr) but here goes anyway.  Ask box is open, slam away.

When the original Little Orphan Annie was written, chronologically we were a lot closer to a time where there was a strong bias against Irish people.  By making Annie red haired, it was implied that she was of Irish descent, and by extension, the audience would have inherently known that was part of the bias against her.

Changing Annie’s race to African American replicates this same dynamic in modern society, and that’s a big part of why so many people were upset by it.  A BLACK orphan?!  Nooooooo, keep her white and red haired and cute I DON’T WANT TO DEAL WITH HOW THIS IS MAKING ME UNCOMFORTABLE.

Casting Annie as black in 2014 is a much more true to the original character than casting her as a caucasian red head.

THIS IS ALL SHADES OF PERFECT

I thought that was going to make me angry, but instead I gave a little cheer and reblogged this as fast as I could.

I don’t understand how ANYONE can possibly find directionless, unproductive anger empowering. It’s the opposite of empowering. It’s helplessness. It’s frustration.

Anger’s useful sure, but you need to know that you’re directing it rationally in the right directions and towards…

While I mostly agree with this, and do think it’s very important to figure out a way to either use or let go of your anger, let me offer a suggestion as to why some people find anger empowering, or enjoy being angry, even if they’re not directing it productively: I think for some people, anger is empowering because they are allowing themselves to be angry. If you have people (including yourself) telling you not to be angry for a long time, or saying that your anger is unreasonable or not allowed, or if you spend all your time suppressing your anger for other people, then the act of allowing yourself to feel anger can be a relief. Yes, this only works in the short term, and eventually you have to let go of anger and/or focus it into productivity. But for some people letting themselves feel anger is an important first step.

For me, I put a lot of pressure on myself to fix everything, even things that are outside my control or that I can only contribute to fixing a little. And sometimes I feel like I’m not allowed to feel angry unless I have a solution and am implementing that solution. And yes. I guess my point is that it can be empowering on a personal level if feeling things like anger was previously something you were not allowed or did not allow yourself to do.

If you were at ECCC and spent any time in Pike Place Market, please read this! If you are feeling sick GO TO A DOCTOR!

Today I am grateful for vaccines. This is a lot worse than the usual “convention crud”.

It’s important to note that if you were exposed and you think you may have measles. you need to call the doctor or the hospital you are going to BEFORE you go. They need to be prepared for your arrival so that you don’t spread measles to others.

Fucking hell. Signal boost for people who were at Emerald City ComicCon and stopped by Pike’s on the 29th.

Oh what the fuck. D:

Fuck. I’m at the Market at least twice a week for lunch; now I have to remember if I was there then. (I’ve been vaccinated against measles, but shit.)

FYI, the CDC says that if you’ve had two doses of the MMR vaccine then you should still be protected. (I’ve never been so glad to have thorough records, man.)

Given how many kids there were at the con, though, keep boosting the hell out of this signal.

signal boost

holy fucking shit

Dear God. Signal boosting. The press release from the Washington State Department of Health is here:

http://www.doh.wa.gov/Newsroom/2014NewsReleases/14047MeaslesMultiCounty.aspx

And the list aof affected places is here:

http://www.doh.wa.gov/Portals/1/Documents/1500/NewsReleases/2014/04-02-2014-WhatcomMeaslesCaseItinerary-final.pdf

Seriously, pay attention to this, most especially if you were in the affected area and are in contact with children or pregnant women!
