Happy Passover Jewish people! And also non-Jewish people, you should be happy too.
…Also Happy Easter if that is your appropriate holiday. Cause that’s tomorrow.
Yesterday I watched Prince of Egypt and it was AMAZING
I haven’t watched that in soooo long. Have some thoughts:
I have exactly one criticism and that is that it would be cool if there were more Egyptians cast. Or even Israelis. Like any, I’m not sure there were any.
OMG THAT MOVIE IS AWESOME.
The music is gorgeous, and hearing Hebrew sung in a major motion picture makes me cry. The opening song is epic.
At no point are any of the Egyptians dehumanized, especially Ramses; they’re always very sympathetic. The gravity of things like the tenth plague is wonderfully expressed, as is Moses’ emotion.
There is some beautiful animation (the water into blood, for instance) and some great placement (the way that Ramses and Seti sit with the statue in the background).
Some of my favorite parts:
When Ramses declares that he’s going to destroy the Hebrews and and Moses realizes there’s going to be another plague, there is a shot of the depiction on the wall of Seti and the death of the Hebrew babies, which draws the parallel not only with what Ramses is about to do, but with the Tenth plague.
When they are about to cross the Red Sea, the Hebrews are not following Moses—at least not entirely. Aaron looks at Moses, then nods at everyone else. They’re following him and Miriam.
After they cross the Red Sea and the Egyptians pursuing them drown, there is a distinct difference in the reactions that the children have and those that the elderly have. The children are happy—gloriously happy, but that’s pretty much the only emotion they’re showing. The elderly, on the other hand—the are in awe. It seems like they can’t quite believe what’s happening, can’t believe that they’re free…and there is a little bit of horror there, too, because unlike the children, they understand that they just watched people die, and they have some understanding of the power they just witnessed.
And my favorite, favorite part:
At the end, three quotes appear on the screen. One from the Torah, one from the New Testament, and one from the Qu’ran.
